The Joy of London Place Names

My book on London place names has to be finished by November, so I am beavering. The joy of this sort of book lies in the snippets you come across along the way. I couldn’t justify including this one, even in the self-indulgent first draft, but I wanted to share it.

Hackney Wick claims to have pioneered the use of the word ‘petrol’, courtesy of a refining company called Carless, Capel and Leonard. I can’t help feeling that if Mr Carless had been signed up by a Hollywood studio, they would have encouraged him to change his name.
