English Usage

Not a rant this time: more a serendipitous discovery.

The American edition of my book My Grammar and I contains an epigraph that we didn’t find for the original version. (So thank you, Reader’s Digest US, for putting this my way.) It’s a quote from E B White, author of Charlotte‘s Web. He says:

‘English usage is sometimes more than mere taste, judgement and education – sometimes it’s sheer luck, like getting across the street.’

I don’t know to what extent I could justify this in a serious debate, but I rather like it anyway.
