Lines I wish I’d written

These are far too numerous to mention, but yesterday I came across a new (to me) one in Lyttelton’s Britain, a compilation of Chairman Humph’s introductions to the towns hosting each week’s episode of I’m Sorry I Haven’t a Clue. With reference to Winchester, he tells us that Emma, the daughter of the Duke of Normandy, came here in 1002 to marry Ethelred the Unready, who used the occasion to launch his unsuccessful range of torch batteries. If you were in Costa Coffee in Earl’s Court about 6 o’clock on Saturday, the woman cackling wildly in the corner was me.
